Painter: Using Watercolour, Acrylics, Pen/ Pencil/Charcoal and Collage

Jewellery: Using mainly semi-precious stones such as jasper, agate, pearls, glass and porcelain/ceramic stones. The finished article is held together with the use of silver and pewter.

I started painting after retirement from business many years ago. Having time on my hands to empty cupboards I found a box of watercolour paints and brushes received as a present and not used. A love of gardens and flowers was the starting point. I set about painting semi-botanical iris which I adore but soon found I got bored and wanted to experiment. It was all a journey of discovery, especially being self- taught.

Now my painting is based on shapes and strong colour in much of the work that I do.

Dorothy Carol Clayton sells her work under the name of Dorothy Carol.

She started painting in 2006 when a friend gave her some silk paints that she didn’t want.

Dorothy thought she would have a go at doing something with them, she used them to do some silk paintings, put them in the local pub which was having an exhibition where they sold, that was it, she was hooked.

She has exhibited in various galleries and local societies and loves the excitement of trying new ideas and colours.

Michael is a retired architect and has produced watercolour paintings since 1992.

His specialities are: architectural subjects, landscapes, seascapes, beach scenes and boats.

He lives in Cobham, Surrey and has produced many watercolours of this locality. He has held one man exhibitions at Esher Further Education College, The Gomshall Gallery, the Leatherhead Theatre and Polesden Lacey Gallery. He has also exhibited at Oxshott Art and Crafts Society, Denbies Vineyard and the Llwewllyn Alexander (Fine Paintings) Ltd Gallery in London as well as in the South of France. He takes commission for painting private houses and similar places of interest.

A lot of his work is produced in the South of France where he and his wife Valerie have a small second home. In 2005 he won the Varoise de Paris prize at an exhibition of Artists de la Region at Le Lavandou, for producing a memorable depiction of a Provençal beach scene.

His paintings are representational and seek to capture a sense of space as well as local atmosphere, particularly in the South of France. The Riviera has a unique atmosphere with exceptional qualities of light. Although popular with tourists, Provençe and that part of the Riviera adjoining Le Lavandou and the offshore islands of Levant have been sensitively developed and the essential characteristics of the area have been preserved, much of the area is a National Park.

Whilst my wife Denise has painted for most of her adult life I had never picked up a paintbrush until the new millennium.

On a sailing holiday in Greece in 2001, I borrowed my wife’s sketching materials to record the beautiful evening light across the harbour in Kuoni, Ithaca and became hooked, originally just sketching and then from 2006 I have painted with increasing regularity.

I have enjoyed several painting holidays in Loch Etive, Scotland and at Chateau L’Age Baston near Angouleme, France. I was taught by professional artists Jane Anderson-Wood, chairman of the Dorking Group of Artists, and Christine McInally, formerly Principal Teacher for Art and Design in North Lanarkshire. Having grown up with wonderful views over the Tyne valley and the Northern hills my main interest is in painting landscapes of coastal scenes and mountains, particularly the Alps in winter.

I joined Oxshott Arts and Crafts Society in 2018. I paint in acrylic and watercolour.

I have no formal education in art but have always loved drawing and painting. I loved art at school and was always drawing and painting as a child. My education in art stopped when I was 13 as I had to give up art in order to study science (which became my career). I continued with art as an amateur throughout my adult life attending many classes and workshops.

Over the last few years I have joined several local art groups, most recently Oxshott Art and Craft Society.
I have enjoyed working mainly in watercolour but also using acrylic. Recently I have also been exploring oil painting and have become captivated by this wonderful medium.

I have also discovered the joys of “plein air” painting in oils and have enjoyed many days throughout the year painting outside in the Surrey countryside. I delight in the use of colour in paintings and try to paint as freely and as expressively as I can.

I am thrilled that one of my paintings has been selected for the Society of Women Artists exhibition in the Mall Galleries, London from 26-30 September 2018.

Charlotte’s textile pictures are created by machine and hand stitching, often using hand printed fabrics. She has a particular love of silk, but also enjoys experimenting with rust, indigo and eco dyeing and different fabric textures.

Her strong sense of colour, simplistic design, and love of 1950s textiles influence her work. Charlotte is inspired by nature, and the places she visits.

She is a member of Ochre Print Studio and enjoys lino and mono printing, often stitching into prints to create more depth and interest.

Miranda grew up on the Isle of Wight and her love of drawing and painting was encouraged from an early age by her mother, a commercial artist and calligrapher, and her father, an enthusiastic amateur marine architect.

A career in Whitehall, followed by bringing up a family, intervened, but she returned to her creative and artistic roots a few years ago by beginning a series of books for small children as a start to a writing career, and then by producing a series of book covers for local music publishers.

Miranda now enjoys experimenting with different media, exhibiting her work and recently having her paintings reproduced in the form of greeting cards. Colour and composition are very important to her and she takes inspiration from very varied sources, but nature and the seashore are recurring ones.

She is an active member of Oxshott and Molesey art societies and also paints and exhibits with MiMA, a mixed media artists’ group in Reigate.

A passion for textiles, stitching & vibrant colours started at an early age. My grandmother, a seamstress, taught me to sew & embroider. These interests from my childhood followed a natural progression to an enduring love of all things handmade.

My creative journey continued at the London College of Fashion then in the ‘rag trade’ working for wholesale fashion houses for many years.

Growing up in the country surrounded by nature ignited numerous ideas for my early artwork. Nowadays inspiration comes from many diverse sources: travelling & experiencing different cultures, visiting galleries & exhibitions, internet research, magazines, textile shows. Furthermore I love visiting historical buildings, particularly observing ancient gates, doors & windows, which I photograph & sketch to incorporate into my work.

I love being creative and making things. I am especially passionate about being eco-friendly and like to re-use, recycle and transform items giving a new lease of life to something old. I incorporate recycled materials into my work, specifically bits & pieces from my travels or something that has been cherished by someone I know.

I continually collect textiles, buttons & trimmings, reluctant to throw anything away as it may come in useful one day!

From seed heads to the birds in the trees; whether it be watercolours, printing or all things textile, my inspiration nearly always comes from the natural world, often just outside in my garden. I love experimenting with different ways of dyeing cloth and yarn and I also sell a wide range of cards made from my original artwork. I am a member of Oxshott Art & Crafts Society and Ochre Print Studios, and a founder member of Textiles on Tuesdays, a creative group which meets at Ochre once a week. I am also a member of the GladRags textile group, based at West Horsley Place. I exhibit with Oxshott Art & Crafts Society, Textiles on Tuesdays & Ochre Print Studios and have taken part in Surrey Artists Open Studios. www

Always loving to paint as a child I was dissuaded by parental control from accepting a place at Hornsey Art College to do an Arts Degree. Instead I qualified as a dispensing optician and have spent many happy years in optics.

During this time my artistic talents were called on in painting backcloths for school pantomimes and later for Cobham Players on an occasional basis. As I could not see any point in paintings being stored under the bed I only painted when I had a wall that needed a picture.

Promising myself that I would join a watercolour class when I retired, thanks to many presents from my stepson I did just that about four years ago when I semi-retired. I was surprised when a fellow student wanted to buy my first effort and this set me on the path I am following now.

I joined Oxshott Art and Crafts Society and also Molesey Art Society and have successfully exhibited and sold many paintings since. I have also been invited to join one, two or three other artists to hold private exhibitions.

I enjoy working in all media and love to push the boundaries and experiment. As for subject matter I like painting landscapes, animals (especially the big cats) and using mixed media to create colourful but constructed abstracts. I sometimes use resin as a final finish to a painting.

To complete each piece of work I enjoy making the frames and framing my own work.

The beauty of wood – colour, grain, feel and form – all give me great pleasure in turning it into beautiful shapes both to look at and to feel – and admired as objects of art as well as finding function where possible.

I occasionally use exotic timbers but most of my work comes from a range of English hardwoods and I enjoy the effects that nature has on some of them.

Beech is a firm favourite, for it is often invaded by fungi that create coloured banding termed spalting that gives each piece a unique pattern.

Another of my joys is English Yew which has so much character and a great variety of colourings within it. I have been lucky to find a few good sources of it.

Whilst I love to produce bowls in shapes that can be admired without necessarily having a function, I also enjoy creating different shapes of functional turnings. Pepper grinders in a variety of shapes have been in demand as well as individualistic pestle and mortars, candle holders, brush and pen pots and pot pouri.

I am always available for specific commissions assuming I can find the wood selected.

Sue spent her career working as an architect and interior designer for multinational blue chip companies and magic circle law companies in the city.

In addition to being a member of OACS, Sue is also a member of Surrey Figurative Artists and The Drawing London Group. She has work in private collections in the UK and USA.

Sue has always spent her spare time doing various forms of art, from painting and drawing to poetry.

She is fascinated by structural forms, so many works are of architectural subjects, Although she also draws and paints the human figure and portraits.

Deciding to become a full time artist in 2010, she now concentrates on printmaking, particularly etching and drawing mainly in ink. Always keeping her sketchbook with her, Sue draws continuously wherever she is.

I spent the first adult years of my life as a cartographer, followed by forty years as a nursery/infant teacher while raising a family.

It was only after retiring I had time to follow my love of drawing, and cautiously to venture into painting. It was a natural progression to move into pastels, inspired initially by painting our home-bred foal. I was then asked by friends to paint their animals.

Workshops with Trevor Waugh developed an awareness of the vibrancy that can be created in a painting by the selective use of colour. My early animals involved painting black horses black, grey horses white and so on. These days they involve a multitude of colours, but rarely black!

I am very aware of the importance of tonal values, getting great pleasure from producing a painting with strong lights and darks. I love to paint sunlight and shadow, and try to create the ’feel good factor’ in my paintings

I also love achieving individual personalities in the eyes of both animal and human portraits.

I greatly enjoy the challenge of creating a painting from several sources. These days, I work mostly in oil, pastel or acrylic.

I am a member of several local art groups with whom I have exhibited successfully. I am a committee member of Molesey Art Society .
I have frequently exhibited at the Landmark Arts Centre, Teddington.

I am a full member of The Society of Feline Artists, exhibiting with them at the Llewellyn Alexander Gallery, London, where I have sold paintings to international buyers.
